Claude Code vs Hiring a Developer:
What I Tell Vancouver Business Owners

I get asked this question every week: "Should I just use Claude Code myself, or do I need to hire someone?"

I'm going to give you the honest answer — which means sometimes I'll tell you that you don't need me, and sometimes I'll tell you that Claude Code alone won't get you where you want to go.

I build with Claude Code every day. I've also been a marketing consultant for 15 years. I have no incentive to lie to you about this.

First: What Claude Code Actually Is

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. You run it in your terminal, and it writes code, edits files, runs commands, installs packages, and builds real software — autonomously. It's not a chatbot. It's a builder.

But it's a builder that needs a director. Claude Code doesn't know what your business needs. It doesn't have product instincts, it doesn't know what will work for your customers, and it doesn't catch bad architectural decisions before they become expensive problems. That's what a human brings.

The Honest Comparison

When Claude Code Alone Is the Right Answer

If you have a technical background — even just basic Python or JavaScript knowledge — and your problem is well-defined, Claude Code on its own is genuinely incredible. You can build a working automation, a data pipeline, or a simple web tool in an afternoon.

The cases where self-directed Claude Code works best:

• You know exactly what you want to build
• It's a contained, single-purpose tool
• You're comfortable debugging when something breaks
• The stakes of failure are low (you can iterate)

If you're a developer or technical founder already, Claude Code is the best tool you'll ever use. You'll ship 5x faster. Full stop.

When You Need a Claude Code Consultant

Most Vancouver business owners I talk to are not technical. They're good at their business — fitness, real estate, marketing, food, professional services. They shouldn't have to become developers to benefit from AI.

You need a Claude Code consultant when:

• You don't know what's possible. You have a vague problem ("I waste too much time on X") but no idea what the technical solution looks like.
• Architecture matters. You're building something that will handle real customer data, payments, or complex workflows — mistakes here are expensive.
• You want it done in 48 hours, not 4 weeks. I've already made the mistakes. I know the patterns that work.
• You want to own it outright. Not a subscription, not a vendor dependency — your code, your infrastructure, deployed to your accounts.

When You Still Need a Traditional Developer

I'll be honest about this too. There are cases where Claude Code — even with expert direction — isn't the right fit:

• Large team codebases. If you have 10+ developers and a complex existing system, you need someone who can do deep code review and architectural work on a legacy codebase.
• Regulated industries with compliance requirements. Healthcare, fintech, legal — these need specialised developers who understand the regulatory landscape deeply.
• Long-term product teams. If you're building a product that needs a dedicated CTO and engineering team, you need to hire engineers — though Claude Code will still make them dramatically more productive.

The Economics: What This Actually Costs

Let's be concrete. A traditional Vancouver development agency for a custom web app:

• Discovery and scoping: $2,000–$5,000
• Development: $15,000–$80,000
• Timeline: 2–6 months

The same project with Claude Code, directed by me:

• Discovery call: Free
• Build: $200–$2,000 depending on scope
• Timeline: 48 hours to 2 weeks

Is every project this dramatic? No. Complex products still take time. But for the majority of what small and medium businesses in Vancouver actually need — a lead gen tool, an automation pipeline, a client portal, a booking system — the gap is real.

My Honest Recommendation

Start with a free discovery call. Tell me what you want to build. I'll tell you whether you should build it yourself with Claude Code, whether you need me to build it with you, or whether it's genuinely a case where you need a full development agency.

I'd rather send you in the right direction than take on a project that's not the right fit. That's what 15 years in marketing teaches you: the right tool for the right job.
